July 2008
Trinity River: The river flows are starting to drop and the fly-fishing should start to get good! Swinging streamers and nymphs has been working for Steelhead, mostly Half-pounders but a few "chrome" bright adult summer run steelies ... in the 4 to 7 lb class!!
The Brown trout fishing is definitely picking up with fish in the 4 to 6 lb class being caught.
The Salmon fishing is also starting with fish being caught below Junction City.
Fall River Valley: The dry fly fishing with BWO and Trico spinners in the mornings and PMD, BWO and Callibatis hatches from mid morning till early afternoons has been productive. The HEX hatch is still happening in the evening but it's been very late coming off and is wide spread throughout the lower half of the river... (it's about over!!). Caddis fishing in the evening is starting to be more consistent and some evenings ...Excellent!
Nymphing is always good before and during the hatches. Streamer fishing is definitely worth a try especially on Big Lake, Eastman Lake and the Tule Rivers.
Hat Creek: The meadow section has not fished well this season (No Weed Beds!). The better fishing this year has been up the PH#2 and down stream in the riffle section above the fish barrier. .. Mostly nymph fishing, there is some dry fly fishing during the mornings (Trico's and Baitis spinnerfalls) and in the evenings with little yellow stones, small mayflies and caddis.
Pit River: Has slowed down... but definitely worth fishing, nymphing with Stones, Hare's Ear, PTs, Black Birdsnest and APs, Terrestrials, Prince Nymph, Copper Johns and Cadis nymphs. Dry fly fishing, if any, will happen in the evenings with small mayflies, caddis and little yellow stones. Streamer fishing is always worth while on the Pit in the deeper runs and pools with Sculpions, Zonkers, Woolly Buggers and Bait fish imitations.
McCloud and Upper Sac Rivers: Are still fishing well, nymphing with the same fly selection as mentioned on the Pit River. The dry fly fishing has been good to great in the evenings with mayflies, little yellow stones and caddis imitations. Lake Shasta is extremely low and forcing alot of Big Browns and Rainbow trout up into the rivers earlier than usual!! Streamer Fishing with sculpions and baitfish patterns... could be real productive
Lewiston and Local Reservoirs: I have not fished any lakes recently but here is a selection of flies you should have in your fly boxes to fish local lakes in N. California.
Dries: Damsels, Callibatis, (duns and spinners) Elk Hair Caddis (Olive, Tan and Black), Termites, Ants (Black and Red), and Beetles.
Wets: Damsels, Callibatis, PTs, Midge Pupa (black, red and olive), Scuds (olive and Hare's Ear), Woolly Buggesr (Black, olive and Brown) Soft Hackles (olive, Hare's Ear, orange and pheasant tail)
If you have some fishing dates in mind for the upcoming trout and steelhead season give me a call and let’s get them in the books. I still have prime time space available (but some months are filling up quickly) for many of these locations and guides.
Also if you need help finding lodging or want the latest fishing report …. give me a call? I look forward to getting on the water and fishing together this season.
