I could spend 2 pages telling you about all the goings on over the past 135 years or so about the Trinity river and surroundings but I’m not an historian …… I’m a fisherman!
When West Coast steelhead fly fisherman talk about steelhead fishing and steelhead rivers, their next breath is about the Trinity River. …… why is that…….
Because it’s that good!!!
The Trinity river from the Steelhead and Salmon fish hatchery at the base of Lewiston dam flows west to the confluence on the Klamath River and offers some of the best steelhead fishing in the Pacific Northwest. Steelhead start showing up in the lower river late July early August and hang out in the lower Trinity until we start to get some rain in September, at that point the fish start their migration up river.
We start fishing for these chrome bright “silver bullets” on the lower river in August and we follow the runs up river. Using traditional steelhead techniques swinging wet flies and skating dries with single handed and spey rods and dead drifting nymphs.
There are many words and expressions to describe “the grab” of a steelhead take and the acrobatics and screaming runs that immediately follow “the grab” …….. For those of you that have experienced this……… you know!! For those who have not yet …….. I’ d like to hear your first words and expressions!!!
All fishing is primarily wade fish and fish from drift boats on run we can not wade, also walk-in trips.
